How Stargazer Semi-Permanent Hair Dye Works

What Semi-Permanent Means Here

Semi-permanent colour sits on the outside of the hair rather than opening it up and rebuilding the pigment inside. There is no developer, no peroxide and no ammonia in the tube, so there is nothing to mix and nothing that lifts your natural colour. You squeeze it onto clean, towel-dried hair, work it through with the gloves that come in the box, leave it 15 to 30 minutes and rinse. Expect around 5 to 10 washes on hair that has not been bleached, and 10 to 15 on hair that has. Leaving it on longer than the stated time will not damage the hair, because there is no chemical in it that can.

What It Will and Will Not Do

It will lay strong colour over a lighter base and it will condition while it does it. It will not make your hair lighter, it will not turn dark hair a bright colour on its own, and it will not cover white or grey hair. Grey needs opaque pigment and this is a translucent dye, so on grey it reads as a faint wash that rinses away quickly. Working Out Which Base You Need

The lighter your starting point, the closer the result is to the tube. Pastels such as Soft Violet, Soft Cerise and Heather need a pale blonde base or they barely register. Bright shades such as Neon Lime, Yellow and Neon Turquoise want the same. Deeper shades such as Tropical Green, Purple and Foxy Red will give a visible cast on dark hair without bleaching, though it reads as a tint in the light rather than a full change. Fluorescent Shades and UV Light

Several of these colours are fluorescent and light up under blacklight, which is why they turn up at festivals, club nights and on stage. Neon Lime, Neon Turquoise, Yellow and Shocking Pink are the ones that glow hardest, and they only glow properly on a pre-lightened base. Fluorescent pigment sitting on dark hair has nothing to bounce off.
