Bleach Facts

When was hair bleach invented?
  • People have been lightening their hair for centuries using natural methods like lemon juice, vinegar, and chamomile combined with sunlight. In the mid-19th century, hydrogen peroxide, discovered in 1818 by Louis Jacques Thénard, began to be used as a more effective hair-bleaching agent, with its use becoming common by 1867.
Will hair bleach kill head lice?
  • Hair bleach hasn’t been scientifically proven to kill head lice, but some people say it works. However, they can't kill lice eggs, known as nits. Other lice removal treatments are likely to be more effective.
Can hair bleach expire?
  • Hair bleach can expire. Typically, it lasts up to three years. Store it in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and heat. If the bleach changes colour, texture (clumping for instance), or smell, it might be expired. Using expired bleach can result in ineffective lightening and potential scalp irritation
How does hair bleach work?
  • Hair bleach works as the hydrogen peroxide reacts with the melanin (the pigment) in your hair, breaking it down. The bleach oxidizes the melanin, effectively stripping the colour from your hair The process lightens your hair in stages, from brown to blonde or white, depending on the duration. Ammonia is often included to help open the hair cuticle, allowing the bleach to penetrate more deeply and work more effectively.
